Troop 286 History
The Terrace Park Boy Scout Troop 286 was
established in 1933. The log cabin at Douglas
and Elm, the “Scout Cabin” was built shortly
thereafter in 1936 by WPA workers, who used
power poles provided by CG&E. Ellis
Rawnsley, in the book A Place Called
Terrace Park, reports that building a log cabin
was a new experience for the WPA workers
and that their corner notching skills improved
with practice, as you can see by looking at
the corners of the Scout cabin from bottom to
top! The floor, ceiling, and trim were made
from trees felled by the workers and made into
boards, and the fireplace and chimney were
made of stones from the creek.
Throughout the years, our small Troop 286
has helped nearly 100 scouts achieve Eagle,
the highest rank in scouting. Our Troop has
also had three men achieve the Silver
Beaver, Scouting’s highest adult leadership
honor.
